Ever wanted to be a cartoon character?

Well one girl took her desire a little bit further than most of us would!

Hard to believe but that is a REAL 19 year old girl in the photo.  She has even created her own make-up tutorials on you tube.

If you too would like to look like a flower fairy… watch this video here http://youtu.be/AmXeQzbHwjo .

I’m not saying I would like to look like this BUT I can appreciate how much make-up can do and feel her tutorial really shows talent!

If you want something done right… then do it yourself!

After being patch tested yesterday for tans and glue yesterday we started to learn self tan application with mitts today.

After being patch tested yesterday for tans and glue yesterday we started to learn self tan application with mitts today.

My usual and partner and I decided I would go first as she would rather wait until next week.  Fine, I don’t mind going first but the lecturer also wanted to demonstrate the body exfoliation element on me for the class.  Didn’t particularly want people seeing my jiggly bits but we compromised on just doing my legs.

My partner then had to exfoliate my top half.  I chose to keep my bra on – others weren’t so modest and were happy to take theirs off.  We had curtains dividing all the beds so it was fairly private for us all.

The routine was legs, belly, arms and back followed by the remainder of the tan on the mitt being put on the backs of our hands, tops of our feet and face.  At this stage I did notice my partner had missed a bit on my arm and we fixed that.

Due to there being time left, I started her exfoliation and tan also.  Now I was very diligent as I normally tan myself with a mitt and so ensured I covered the bits I hate to have missed, armpits, under the ears, hairline etc.

After the class we headed to 2 hours of theory and it was after this class I went to the bathroom and noticed how orange my face was! Yes, my partner had somehow put too much on my face and not gone close enough to my hairline, missed a bit at the side of one eye, a bit on my chin and under my ears entirely!

I am glad I noticed early enough on to go home and shower it off before the 8 -10 hours guideline.  Thankfully its not too noticeable with the guide colour washed off but do be careful and try to keep a mental note of what your partner is doing in their tan routine so you don’t end up with white patches.  I also noted after the shower I have one white elbow and white ankles on one foot. Woops!

Another day of placement tomorrow to look forward to and fingers crossed on Thursday we will be starting eyelash extensions and continuing the facial routine.

The Tan we used was from the He-Shi range.  Not too bad a smell from it and the colour that I did pick up from the few hours it was on was quite nice and took well on my arms and legs.

The end of a tiring week

This week was rather tiring to put it mildly.  Cramming in 20 hours at work, an 8 hour day at placement and 18.5 hrs at college really is taking its toll on me.

Wednesdays placement was nice.  It was a different therapist working and as se had her sister booked in for gel nails I was able to watch to see how she did those.  The day still entailed the expected cleaning routine, so hovering and mopping.  Also changing couch roll and making sure the therapy room was set for the next client.

I had a 10 hour day at college yesterday and came home to sleep for 10 hours last night!  Not that the day was “hard” just very long.  In fact, I would say it was the most enjoyable yet! We moved onto the mask, steaming and massage elements of the facial.  Our facial routine really is coming along quite nicely.  I do wish I had people at home to practice on.  OH isn’t really up for facials and my daughter is only 5 so I wouldn’t put her skin through it for my benefit of practice.

On the topic of the facial products we are using, I’m very sad to see Dermalogica have lost their leaping bunny due to deciding to sell in China.  It has me even more excited about the college switching over to Eve Taylor.

The evening portion of the day was back onto eyes.  Due to a timetable change we now have a different tutor for this class and so she recapped over the tinting process and starting on eyebrow shaping.  I didn’t feel like we learned too much in the eyebrow shaping process sadly but my eyebrows did take better to the tint this week.  We changed the colour to brown/black rather than just brown and left it on a little longer.  Progress!

We were supposed to be patch tested for the tan we are learning to use next week, but they forgot.  Will have to remind the tutor on Monday as I really want to learn the tanning sooner rather than later.

We are also going as a class to a beauty show in Dublin in just over a week.  Looking forward to seeing what they have going on there and experience the environment.

Back to normality for the weekend, working both days before I head back in on Monday for the day of theory.  Still no sign of my kit bag, hoping it arrives soon though as I want to play with it.

Kit bags are a girl’s best friend

I am well and truly sick of cramming bits of my kit into my (all be it large) handbag each day for college and removing it when I leave college to resume normal life.  Tonight I decided to change that and I have ordered myself a Fräulein3°8 kit bag.  Hands up, I did go all out girly and went for a pink handbag style one.

I know it sounds silly but it took me quite a while to find one I would buy.  My problem is I have a fear of velvet (in fact even typing the word grosses me out!) and a lot of the girls in my class have kit bags with velvet lined inners.  I just could NOT be dealing with that in my own.  I am pleased to say the one I bought is lined in faux leather.

While I was in a shopping mood I decided to get some comedone extractors.  We are doing comedone removals this week as part of our continuing facial routine and I figure the extractors will come in handy in the future.

Today was a full day of theory due to a room move, which was fine.  We did however get to try 2 exfoliators on the back of our hands.  One “scrubby” exfoliator and one fruit acid based one (Guinot Gommage Biologique).  Now when we used the rough one on the back of one hand we let it dry in and then rubbed/flaked it off.  You could see an instant difference between the two hands.   The one we had exfoliated clearly looked smoother and more defined.  However we then used the Guinot gel like exfoliator on our other hand, rubbed it in and then washed it off and WOW.  The hand with the fruit acid exfoliaton process was much smoother (and smelt much nicer).  I was rather shocked as I always though scrubby was the way forward and that all exfoliators where similar.  How wrong was I?

To make up for todays theory, tomorrow will be a full day of practical based on the facial routine and will include steaming, exfoliation and comedone removal as mentioned above.  The idea of removing other people’s black heads does 100% gross me out, going to do my best to find a partner with as few of them as possible.

Ever wanted your self esteem pulled to shreds?

Then just wait until you get to doing a skin consultation!  We had the joy of doing these in class when learning more of the facial routine.  Between being told I had a pustule, a few comedones, some open pores, a broken capillary and some thickening of the skin around my jaw line from my teenage years, I am not sure which depressed me more.  The only good news is I apparently am not showing signs of aging yet which I can thank my oily teenage years on.

That all said, I did actually enjoy learning more of the facial routine.  Later in the day we moved onto eye treatments.  We managed to squeeze in learning how to tint each others eyelashes and eyebrows.  We were advised that eyelashes would be the harder of the two tints but I have to say, I really did find the eyelashes easier, or at least they looked the better of the two tints in my opinion.  Both mine and my partners lashes looked fab, so don’t worry when you are doing this part of your course, I am sure you will do fantastic.  As for brows, well I opted for brown which didn’t take too well despite being reapplied.  I can see my brows are slightly darker however there is no tint on the skin.  My partner however chose black as she has used it before.  I was a little wary of it but our lecturer said she would use black on herself too and it’s a common choice so off we went.  Her tint looked very dark and took quite strongly to the skin despite being painted on one brow, on the next brow and then rubbed off (so perhaps 30 – 45 secs development time?).  I wouldn’t advise you use black when doing this training unless you already have VERY dark hair.  Perhaps opt for brown-black.

Not wearing mascara was a great feeling! And none of those little dark circles under my eyes by the end of the day.  I have also managed to secure a number of guinea pigs to practice my tints on – woohoo!  Going to do my mother in laws eyelash tint over the weekend for a party she is attending on Tuesday and have had a few girls I work with ask if I can do theirs also.  Just need to sort them out with patch tests and off I go!

I was also pleased to note that the tint which we use is not tested on animals.  I am very much an animal lover and ideally would like my kit to be filled only with items not tested on animals.

Next week in our eye treatments class we will be getting patch tested for glue and tan so we can start our eyelash extensions and tanning!  Lash wise, we will be doing both individual and strip lashes.  I can see those being easy to find people to test on too.  No doubt lots of people will want to have them for party nights.  Have a feeling I will be charging for the cost of the lashes though or I will be ending up well out of pocket.
We also had our uniform fittings today.  Very glad we got to try on before we order as the tops are a good fit but the trousers run small.  They will be black with a purple trim.  Very plain and pretty.  No college logo this year which makes them a little more useful in the real world too I guess and so better value for our money.

Today was an IT class.  Very frustrating for me as I am actually very good with the PC/Laptop, however as I didn’t get a GCSE in ICT 11 years ago when I did my exams I still have to take the class.  Today it was a quick assessment to see what level we are at.  I am apparently a level 3. A-level quality… the class I have to go to every week is to teach up to a basic level 2 … somebody PLEASE tell me the logic in this? Why exactly make me do a test to see what level I am only to ignore it and teach me what I already know with the others who aren’t as competent?!

The hunt for a placement and the start of practical work!

You may remember from my last update that I needed to find a placement for my course.  I decided to visit some of the local salons on Thursday to try and get it all sorted sooner rather than later.  The first one I went to was closed due to treatment in progress.  The second I spoke briefly to the manager who said it shouldn’t be a problem as I wanted a Wednesday while their other placement student is in on a Thursday.  She did however suggest I come back on Saturday to talk to the salon therapist.

Dutifully I go along on Saturday to talk to the therapist who informs me that she will require I come to do a trial day before she will confirm a placement.  We agree I will come in on Wednesday as it is my first day of placement although she won’t sign my forms required for the college to ensure me! ARGH!  I needed to head to work but I also needed to sort out a confirmed placement, I quickly ran to the Salon I had first visited on Thursday (and was closed) and thankfully managed to speak to the owner.  She was a little dubious at first as she had a bad experience in the past with a lazy placement student who was more effort for her to have around than help.  Luckily I managed to explain that I have worked before and I am a very diligent worker and would be happy to get a reference if needed and she decided she would take the chance – so I start placement tomorrow at 10am!  Exciting stuff!

This week on the whole has been pretty exciting.  On Monday I turned up for my theory lesson and it turned into our first practical!  We paired off and got to start learning the beginnings of a facial.  A superficial cleanse.  I got to be the test subject for my partner and I really enjoyed it.  It can’t be a bad day when you go to college to get a facial right?  The booklet is however rather massive! I do wonder how I will remember the whole lot once we have learnt the whole facial.

Today it was back to more practice, only this time I got to perform the superficial cleanse on my partner and also did a skin analysis.  The end of the day was a little less fun, we did a 2 hour class on health and safety.  In all honestly the lecturer just read the handouts and asked us to make a silly little poster.  Nothing I couldn’t do or didn’t know already.  Very frustrating but essential I guess in order to get through to the end of the course and earn that distinction I so want.

Really looking forward to getting back on Thursday as it is our long day; the one where we will be doing more on the facial routine as well as eyelash tinting and eyebrow waxing.   However tomorrow has me feeling nervous, placement time from 10am.  Hoping it goes well as I really want to impress.  Should really head off to bed saying as I need to be up early to get the littley to school before the placement.  I will for sure be on tomorrow evening to update you on how the first day of placement went, catch you then!
